As John Laundre observes in his new book PHANTOMS OF THE PRAIRIES, most cougar confirmations on the prairies of central North America are along wooded river corridors. These are the dispersal corridors they will use if they manage to recolonize the Midwest.

Wildlife Experts Confirm Increased Cougar Population in Nebraska
Wildlife experts say the recent cougar sightings across Nebraska could become more common.
Nebraska Game and Parks Wildlife Division Assistant Administrator Jeff Hoffman says the predators, which were once nearly extinct in Nebraska, are making a comeback.
“From 2007 to 2011, there were 115 confirmations,” Hoffman says.
