A previously unannounced remote camera photo was taken on January 27, 2012 in Reynolds County about 7 miles west of Centerville. A young male, estimated to be about 2 years old, had been captured and released elsewhere in Reynolds County on January 4, 2012. It is quite possible this January 27th photo is of the same cat.
Far away, another remote camera snapped a cougar on February 16th near Vermillion, in the extreme southeastern corner of South Dakota. That makes three known confirmations outside the range of recognized breeding populations east of the Rockies. Go to http://cougarrewilding.org/CougarNews/?p=5218 for more information on the Vermillion confirmation.
