All three localities mentioned in the article below are on Vancouver Island. Wikipedia notes, “More than two-thirds of the Canadian fatalities occurred on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.” Yet cougars in British Columbia are heavily hunted–possibly overhunted. Squamish is north of Vancouver on the BC mainland. Seems that Linnell & his friends did everything right.
